Maryland and federal laws about lead paint are designed to reduce childhood lead poisoning. Housing units constructed prior to 1978 may contain lead-based paint. The deterioration of lead paint can result in exposure to lead-containing dust. Children under the age of 6 are most at risk of exposure to lead because of their rapid growth and tendency to place their hands or other objects, which may be contaminated with lead dust, into their mouths.

Residential Lead Paint Hazards Program goals:

• Prevent lead exposure due to deterioration and/or disturbance of lead-painted surfaces in homes constructed prior to 1978.
• Comply with federal, state and local regulations governing control of lead hazards in housing properties.
